"Black cat or white cat: If it can catch mice, it's a good cat." ~ Chinese Proverb
Here at the shelter, a black cat can almost always be found lounging on a perch in the cat condo room, or sleepily awaiting affection as it lounges in one of our free roam rooms. They eat, sleep and purr the same way as any of our other cats, yet they are the most prominent kind of cat at the shelter, and also the least likely to be adopted. Though we love to see any cat find a new forever family, we love nothing more than to see a black cat find its new forever home. Unfortunately, whether due to unfortunate (and unfounded) superstitions, or the fact that they are not as visually appealing as the tiger cats or tortoiseshells, black cats spend a great deal of time at the shelter. They patiently await that special someone that will notice them not for the color of their fur, but for their personality, and the love they have to offer instead.
"A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere." ~ Groucho Marx
Superstitions have long surrounded black cats, most of which being that they are bringers of bad luck, or in some cases, considered evil. Due to these unfortunate connotations, black cats are often associated with Halloween, and as October 31st nears each year an abundance of black cat décor can be found among the regular pumpkins, ghouls, and blood-thirsty Dracula’s. Instead of being seen as the affectionate, loving creatures that they are, black cats are often perceived as unattractive, unpleasant, and full of misfortune. However, despite being well known for the negative superstitions that surround them, there are many that believe black cats bring good fortune and luck.
"Whenever the cat of the house is black, the lasses of lovers will have no lack." ~ English Proverb
Black cats were once believed to bring good luck to English sailors, especially if kept happy and content. A happy black cat was sure to bring fair weather for their sailor masters, although who knows what would happen if the cat was not kept happy! Wives of fisherman also believed that a black cat in the house brought them good luck, and the presence of a black cat ensured a safe voyage home for their fisherman husbands. Those in the south of France have believed that a black cat, if well cared for and fed, will bring plenty of good luck and fortune to their caretakers.
All in all, black cats are just like the rest. They crave affection from their owners, love to pick crumbs off of the counter when no one’s looking, will have no problem taking your spot on the couch, and will more than likely hide under the couch when they know a trip to the veterinarian is approaching. So, in honor of National Black Cat day, I’d like to introduce you to some of our beautiful, sweet and cuddly black cats currently looking for their forever homes.

Oswald
Oswald found himself at the shelter in January 2014, after being found as a stray by a concerned stranger who was not afraid of a black cat crossing his path. Oswald is extremely sweet and approachable, leading us to believe that he was left as a stray by his previous owners. We have estimated him to be around four years old, and he is quite the lively, friendly guy. He loves cuddles and attention, and is sure to be a trusting, purrfect companion for anyone.
Salem
Salem, a breathtakingly handsome long haired cat, was surrendered to the shelter as his previous owner felt a cat was too burdensome. Salem has been awaiting a new home for the last seven months, and although he is sweet, affectionate and handsome, he is constantly dismissed by prospective adopters. He is quite a large cat, making him the perfect size for cuddling, and his fluffy hair will assure you that any white clothing you have will be adorned with black hairs. On the plus side, if you are a fan of black clothing (popularly known to help any body shape look svelte and lean, ladies!) then you are just in luck.
Thomasina
Black cats are just as cuddly as any other cat! Thomasina is so charming and loving, we were surprised when her previous owners gave her up without so much as a second glance seven months ago. Since her arrival at CGHS, she has been stealing the hearts of our staff, who have fallen in love with her affectionate personality and even more affectionate cuddles. Thomasina is still young and full of love and energy, and would make a great family cat for anyone willing to open their hearts for this sweet girl.
"Sometimes it happens that a black cat lets you pass in front of it." ~ Author Unknown
There are many more black cats awaiting adoption at the shelter, so throw your superstitions to the wind and come fall in love with one of them (or two, or three, or all of them!)
